The camera's sensor is much more sensitive than my eyes, and with distant birds or bad light, I can see much more on the back of the camera than I can through the binoculars. When birding, I frequently carry binoculars and a camera with a long lens. We also appreciate tools that help us in bad light or with fleeting glimpses. We may, however, appreciate help when learning new species (traveling to a place where the birds are different, for example). Birders don't want to abdicate identification to a machine. Meanwhile, I don't think their utility is exactly what some in this forum think it is.

I suspect that the software inside these binoculars will improve with time, and the Merlin app will get better at working with them.
